Moving a 6-meter welding machine precisely and safely. KAITECH developed the PLC and HMI from scratch to build the automatic control program for a large welding machine.

■ The Challenge

This customer manufactures welding machines and needed a new control program developed for a 6-meter girder welding machine. Accurate speed control was required on both the X and Y axes, while operators also needed a control panel that was easy to use on the floor.

■ Our Approach

KAITECH developed the PLC program that controls the machine’s motion from scratch, and built the operator interface using a Delta HMI panel. Precise speed control on the X and Y axis servo motors delivers accurate motion even on a large welding machine. The team drew on experience with a range of industrial communication protocols (EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP, Profibus, Profinet, CAN/CANopen and others) to safely integrate with the machine’s control systems.

■ Results & Highlights

  • Automated a 6-meter girder welding machine with high-precision speed control on both the X and Y axes
  • Built a new HMI operator panel designed for ease of use on the floor
  • Supported multiple industrial communication protocols, integrating safely with the existing machine systems
  • Raised the machine’s level of automation through a newly developed control program

■ Why KAITECH Was The Right Fit

Moving a large industrial machine safely and accurately takes more than PLC control logic — it also demands an HMI design floor operators can use intuitively, and the ability to work with a range of industrial communication protocols at the same time. KAITECH’s ability to develop all of this as one connected effort is what supported this welding-equipment manufacturer’s new control-program development.
